IIRC, the treaty covering this type of thing says, basically, that if two people are married in one country, their marriage is legal in all signing countries, unless, of course, that marriage is illegal in the second country ... it's a part of the treaty that doesn't have any real teeth.
But, you're right, although this would probably have no effect on U.S. jurisprudence, since they've been making a point of ignoring international precedent.
