Am I a heathen if I agree with the review of Gravity's Rainbow? I tried to read that one in university but only made it through the first two chapters before thoughts of suicide as a method of escape made me return the thing.

-- Steve can't even remember those chapters now... it's all a merciful blank.

I was very, very forcibly reminded of a quote from Terry Pratchett. "That seems to point up a significant difference between Europeans and Americans. A European says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with me?" An American says: "I can't understand this, what's wrong with him?" " (Source here.) I don't know how many of those reviewers were Americans, and Eru knows I'm not about to go tracking, having so many better things to do with my life, but a lot of them seem to be of the "what's wrong with him?" kind of people.
