It reminds me of a series of books I read parts of as a child, but I can't remember the name of them now. It was some genius kid who went around trading things in that way - something of slightly lesser value to someone for something of greater value, then up from there, depending on who had what unique needs. And I believe the stories were written from the viewpoint of the Dumber Sidekick, a la Hercule Poirot books, Sherlock Holmes stories, and so many other things.
