"When a ship is sinking or in trouble, a sailor's thoughts often turn to what fate may await him in the unfriendly sea. Drowning would be a welcomed death when compared to be devoured by any number of aquatic horrors. Saint Architeuthis is the one to pray to and to ask for mercy in this case. In this painting, the last man on board the ship, is visited by the saint and is receiving the blessing of a quick and speedy death by water rather than by teeth and tentacle."
