"New [American, natch] federal guidelines ask all females capable of conceiving a baby to treat themselves -- and to be treated by the health care system -- as pre-pregnant,"

That's right, ladies, you couuld become the host body for a new generation of hearty (Republican) manly men OR maybe another, lesser baby-incubation device AT ANY TIME, so you'd better not smoke or drink or do anything that might theoretically harm that "embryonic-American"!

Almost makes a girl want to take up smoking just to spite them.

Almost.

It's stupid that they're phrasing this as "preconception" health. The guidelines apply equally to men and women alike, and trying to make it out to be a female health issue is utterly retarded and short-sighted.

All of this shit? You're supposed to be doing it ANYWAY! You need folic acid to stimulate production of red blood cells, to help metabolize protein, help your other cells replace themselves, and help keep your blood homocysteine levels down (too much homocysteine? Heart disease, yay!).

[ I have a heart problem, so I'm Clued In here. ]

Keep your blood pressure, diabetes, etc. under control and don't smoke? Well, fucking DUH. They'll KILL YOU.

This is just a bunch of busybodies pulling the "Think of the CHYLLLLDRUUUNNNN!" card to scare people into taking care of themselves, going about it in the stupidest way possible.

So, from now on, when you look up the phrase "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions", you'll find this article.

Y'know, there's nothing I found particularly disturbing about this. Most of it is common sense for everyone male or female, planning to make babies or not.

Until I saw this part:
"At Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, N.Y., a form that's filled out when checking a patient's height, weight and blood pressure prompts nurses to ask women, 'Do you smoke, and do you plan to become pregnant in the next year? And if not, what birth control are you using?'"

Seems like common sense as well, until you juxtapose this with the current christian-nationalist tendencies of the current US administration.

To really put this into perspective you have to take the birth control comment and put it into my perspective.

I am (was at the time) 48, obese, single, no kids, no family, no men in my life at the doctor for extreme menstral problems including killer cramps and hemoraging bleeding. "Okay we're going to take you off XXXX and leave you on YYYY. What are you going to use for birth control?" Me - I don't need any. Them "This won't work as a birth control pill. What are you going to use as birth control?" Me - "I'm single. I don't need any." Them "But you need to do something for birth control." Me, loudly "ABSTINANCE OK? SINGLE, NO MEN, GOT IT?" We went through this on two successive visits before they finally quit asking the question. Considering that as a diabetic with high blood pressure, high cholesteral and a family history of heart disease and stroke the pill would NOT be a good idea for me even if I needed birth control, this is the kind of thinking that can kill women. Or at least make the pharmacuitcal companies rich.
