Wolverine's had every single fanboy-wishes-he-was-me origin story in existence. He really is a completely pointless character.

I think when he was first introduced he did add something to the mix of the "international" team. The barely-part-of-the-team member of the team. Since then he's used to fill in for whatever role the writer using him feels like. Schooling Punisher? Jobbing to Punisher? Father figure? Romantic lead? Crazed killer? Best-of-the-best? He does it all!
