American law now allows any health-care professional or any instution associated with health care, including *insurance companies*, to refuse to provide abortions, pay for them, or make abortion-related referrals, even in cases of rape or medical emergency.

Yes, that's right. Ectopic pregnancy? You're going to die? Tough. Got a prescription for birth control? Your pharmacist doesn't have to fill it. Got a medically required operation and a prescription for it and all that? Your insurance company doesn't have to pay for it, even if your policy says you're covered.

A friend of a friend was asked (just last night) why most med students get their first internal gynecological examination on a patient who is in the hospital for something completely unrelated and *drugged into unconsciousness*, and hence incapable of objecting: Her answer was "Because women's lives don't matter."
