Dec. 5th, 2013 02:21 pmFor people who've read these Charlie Stross novels[1]: In Saturn's Children and Neptune's Brood, people by default keep two running backups of their soul, as well as possibly an offsite non-real-time one for the ultra-rich to be resurrected if need be. Both backups are running in adjacent slots at the base of the skull, and thus the only way for someone to *die* under normal non-homicide circumstances is a freak accident that kills the brain *and* both soul chips, all at once.
We sometimes see people using a soul slot for data storage, and that's where a slave chip goes, and all that - but do we ever see anyone with *more* than two soul chip slots? Or with chip slots in a different location? I can imagine some uses for having the "normal" two slots configured only for nonprivileged access, or for write-only access so they've got your running backup but the ports will simply ignore an override, and you insert the chip somewhere else if you actually want to read from it.
And even assuming no nefarious purposes, wouldn't it make a little more sense to separate the chip slots physically? An accident only needs to crush your head to kill you, which is admittedly a rare thing - but wouldn't it be better if it had to crush your head *and* lower abdomen?
Anyway. I don't remember ever seeing a character with that kind of modification, not even the cloned space assassins. Did I miss it? Or am I forgetting some explanation for why this isn't possible?
