Mar. 15th, 2016 12:09 pmGoogle's AlphaGo program has been granted an honorary 9th dan Go grandmaster rank - the first honorary professional rank, ever.
(Normally to get a professional rank you must participate in tournaments. Deepmind beats 9th dan grandmasters; it would be frankly unfair to stick it in first dan qualifying tournaments, or anything else on the way up to earn a "real" professional rank.)
