See this picture? Looks normal, right?

Save it to your PC. Change the file type to "rar". Open the resulting archive.

Enjoy!

Hmmm, did not work. Winrar says that no archives were found. It's saving as a BMP file labled "Untitled."

Right-click, save as, it should save a 2.8MB file called lovecraft.jpg.

Worked for me. Most cunning indeed. Things lurked within, not apparent to mortal eyes, and I quail to think on what I saw there...

I already had most of those as txt files, but cool none the less.

Apparently my AV scanner thinks the file is odd . . . if I disable it then it works - in Firefox 2.0. However, no matter what I do in IE 7 it breaks.

Interesting . . .

If it's saving as "untitled.bmp", then IE isn't saving the file itself, it's saving a new image based on the one it is displaying.

Which is, frankly, fucked up behaviour.

And yes, the file is odd. It's a JPEG that's way, way bigger than it should be, with a 5MB PDF compressed inside it.

Just change the file name wherever you have it, and it'll work.

Ok, apparently I'm an idiot, but how do you change the file type after it's saved as .jpg?

Save is however it is Mac users save an image on a web page. Open it using however it is that Mac users read RAR files.

My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> View

Uncheck "hide extensions of known file types", which is the single worst piece of UI crime ever committed by Microsoft.

Click OK.

Now, you'll see the file as lovercraft.jpg. Right-click -> rename, change ".jpg" to ".rar".

Damn it, the file has a bit of metadata encoded in it on my computer at least, that means that it is showing up as a jpeg, no matter what the extention, and thus my archive program refuses to open it.

Or, I could be dumb, and just never installed a program that will extract rar files before.

The mouse that comes in the box is a single button one. Ctrl-click is the right-click for Macs. It's generally assumed that Mac users don't need to operate their machine one-handed, for some reason.

(Me, I use a trackball or a pen-tablet. The mouse is a shit invention, in my view.)

You don't *actually* have to change the file type. You can just open the file in a RAR-reading program without changing the file type.

Changing the file type just makes it pointed.

Generaly not on Ubuntu, where I just installed unrar (which isn't gpl, and thus requires that I have certain repositories enabled).

Do you know of any decent trackballs for the Mac? I agree on prefering them to mice, partly because I find them easier to use, and partly because I keep a cluttered desk and that's not a problem with the trackball.

However, the old spare trackball I nabbed from my parents doesn't work with my mac, and I've never gotten around to searching out a good trackball for it. I currently use one of these on my PC and quite like it.

Only one way to find out!

(Two, if you count reading the other comments and seeing all the "neat!" things that you wouldn't expect from goatse.)

I'll take the word of the other commentors and try it out. That, and I've been numbed to the effects of goatse thanks too the internet.

I'll have to try IE, though, because for some reason Foxfire is being strange and refusing to allow me to see or save the image.

I've never had a trouble plugging any standard USB HID into a Mac. I used to like the Kensington ones, but lately I use a trackpad, a no-brand thing I picked up for cheap at Maplin.
