Teenage boy gets 10 years in jail with no parole, for having consensual oral sex with teenage girl. Now, he has to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

(Intercourse would have gotten him 1 year, with no sex offender listing, but only if it resulted in pregnancy)

I think a pardon is in order if the state government has any self respect.

I don't know... I'd chalk this one up to evolution. You have a party with drugs, booze and underage girls. You have sex with drugged girls and/or underage girls, and you VIDEOTAPE IT, and don't delete the tape when you wake up the next day. You guys like evolution, right? This is evolution in action. Mercy for idiots is a Judeo-Christian value.

I'm old enough that I'm somewhat squicked by 15 year olds being at a party in a hotel room with drugs and booze and sex. However, the sentence makes no sense. If the 15 year old girl had been his girlfriend, if they'd been on a date instead of at a hotel room party with drugs, and if he'd been white, I bet this would never have gone to trial. It's all about so-called morals and race, not about the act itself.

#1: They're both of age in all civilised countries. Just not in the USA.

#2: Consensual sex, with a sober, informed partner of his own age. Yeah, sure, that's a crime worthy of that sentence.

#3: You want to tell me that you seriously think this would have gone through if he was white?

I'm not even indicating that he was doing something wrong, evil or bad. Just that he was doing something illegal, along with a bunch of other people doing various illegal things, being videotaped, and not getting rid of the evidence. That's dicey; and unlike God, Evolution does play dice as a matter of habit.

He did something stupid and had bad luck. Could happen to anyone.

I don't see what the color has to do with it, frankly. Are you saying that white people can break the laws in public and get away with it? I don't think the USA would still be around today if this was the case.

On #1, it's a state issue, not a federal issue. In the state I live (Maine), 16 is the age of consent... with the following exception: if one participant is 13, 14 or 15, the other sex participant must be (upwardly or equally, not downwardly/less than 13) within five years of their age. This state would have allowed the act, that state did not. The Maine exception effectively allows for Freshmen to date Seniors in high school (with all the benefits that dating may entail).

There's also an exception in Maine if one of the partners is a school teacher and/or an adult serving in a direct - not indirect - management capacity of children in a workplace. IE: 16 is the default age of sexual consent... unless the other partner is the science teacher. Then, the younger partner must be out of school... even if they are 19 because they were held back a year. And, the adult teacher needn't work at the same school - the law still applies.

(Why do I know this? First, when I was 16 my first girlfriend and sexual experience was 24. Knowing the law helped thwart my Freudianly jealous/overprotective mother from sending in the State Troopers. Secondly, I once worked for a school department as a computer tech, and was given these laws as part of the orientation. They also said I was legally exempt and could hump 16 and 17 year olds because I wasn't in a direct management capacity of minors, but would be fired due to certain school board policies if I ever got caught. No, I never did anything like that. Honest. But that orientation was one of the funnest I've ever attended.)

Blame the state, not the nation. Some of us have more reasonable local legislatures than others.

Yeah, I'm a little ticked at being lumped in with Georgia too. But Weaselyking was probably too busy drinking Elsinore beer and eating donuts to worry about that.

The defense, the judge, and the jury all think it's unjust.

However, the jury convicted *without knowing what the minimum sentence was*, the judge cannot give less than the minimum sentence, and the PROSECUTION thinks this is fine and dandy and that he should be labelled a child molestor for life. After all, they pressed the charges and presented the case.

Conspiracy against Lee(s): "Weaselyking" is also clearly biased against Ohio. If this story had occurred there, he would have made some crack about O-HI-O in the title, I guarantee it.
