The town of Paris, Texas, legendary for its massive and theatrical lynchings of blacks in the past, still practices institutionalised racism:

19-year-old white man, convicted of criminally negligent homicide for killing a 54-year-old black woman and her 3-year-old grandson with his truck, sentenced to probation and required to send an annual Christmas card to the victims' family.

14-year-old black girl, no criminal record, accused of shoving (with no injuries) a white hall monitor in school, sentenced to 7 years in prison.

14-year-old white girl, convicted of arson, sentence (from the same judge): probation.

One school's records show that black students are punished twice as often as whites for disciplinary infractions, and eight times as often for "class disruption". Some of the teachers say this is policy. I will simply point out the irony inherent in the choice of terminology for that particular offense in this town.
