Although I would vote for him in an instant - and some people believe it might be true - it won't happen. IIRC, in order for him to be a candidate, he and Comedy Central would have to discontinue broadcasting his show due to equal air-time restrictions on candidates.

Or maybe that doesn't apply to cable?

It never stopped Bill the Cat from running.

#1: Not sure.
#2: Write-ins, man.

I'm sure, at some point, he'll do a show about how he's being unfairly barred from running by some stupid "rule", at which point it really will become a write-in campaign.

The problem is, Colbert's fans aren't the people who you want writing in votes. They're the people who are voting for the least-stupid option, meaning you really need them to outnumber the 29% crazification factor.

Actually, there's a few reasons why that might not be true.

"Congress reacted quickly by creating four exemptions to the equal opportunity law. Stations who gave time to candidates on regularly scheduled newscasts, news interviews shows, documentaries (assuming the candidate wasn't the primary focus of the documentary), or on-the-spot news events would not have to offer equal time to other candidates for that office. Steven Colbert, with the "t" pronounced, is an almost supernaturally intelligent, quick-witted man who I would be proud to have as my president.

If he intends to run in character, and preside as president in character, I'd be less willing.

That's what I'm worried about. Also, how many people of the "Colbert Nation" fail to understand sarcasm and satire, and will vote for him thinking his character is who he is. If he runs as himself, we may well be finding me in the voting booths proudly checking the boxes.

Also, I can't help but think how hilarious it would be if he wins the popular vote, but is dropped by the electoral votes. All I know is we'll quickly find out how many of the Colbert Nation are part of the NRA....
