US shocked, SHOCKED to learn that their only ally is a hated military dictator, who is hated, military, and dictatorial.

And I love how people think Benazir Bhutto is somehow going to be better.

She DOES have the advantage of not being hated, and not being military. No idea where she stands on the dictatorial front.

Of course, if somehow she magically ends up in power, the military will promptly replace her with someone they prefer, so she doesn't seem like much of an alternative.

Our interim placeholder government is also shocked. I'm a little surprised that he had the stones to go through with it, considering the US is breathing down his neck, but definitely not shocked.

She's not hated, but her background's fairly shady. Her past tenure was mired by corruption (money laundering being the main charge), and she actively supported the Taliban during their takeover of Afghanistan. She's supposedly changed her stance on the Taliban now, but I have a hard time believing that she didn't know what they were like when she gave monetary and military aid to them. Pakistan's been involved in Afghanistan's internal affairs from the sidelines for years; I don't doubt that she was at least somewhat cognizant of the nature of the Taliban.
