That's one quarter of his body weight in eight months. Drastic and certainly not healthy. Even a 3000 calorie diet is less than his basic metabolic rate, so yes, they're starving him.
No-where does it mention what a qualified medical doctor has to say, nor his BMI, nor his fat percentage. Unless he's 6'15" and built like a bull, 400+ pounds isn't healthy. If he's 6'4" and muscled, he has a good body weight at this time (300 pounds).
It doesn't matter. Too rapid weight loss, no matter your starting weight, is dangerous. You lose muscle mass instead of fat, and he describes feeling faint when trying to excercise. (They also doesn't mention anything about supplements. People who are post bariatric surgery loses weight at that rate, but they need lifelong supplements of several vitamins.)
What people seem to forget is that it's possible to be both obese and malnourished. He's less obese, true, but his health is probably much worse.
See also Gina Kolata's >Rethinking Thin. It's got somewhat about dieted-down fat people being metabolically like starving thin people, not like naturally thin people.
