A college softball player, a senior who had never hit a home run, finally hit her first home run earlier this month. In her excitement to round the bases she missed first base, twisted to go back and tag it, tore a knee ligament and crumpled to the ground, unable to walk. Dismayed, it was explained that her team mates were prevented by the rules from picking her up and carrying her around the bases. She was about to be carried off the field when, instead, two members of the opposing team picked her up and carried her around the field, lowering her so she could touch each base as they passed them.

As they approached home base they were met with a standing ovation.

A nice gesture, but they did't need to. If a better is injured, a substitute can be used. The substitute must touch all awarded or missed bases not previously touched. As the ball was out of the park, the substitute would just have to run round all the bases for the score to count

Not according the the umpire. If they wanted to substitute a runner, the play would end at first, the hit would be a 2-RBI single, and the replacement would start at first base.

As it says, in the article.

OK, that made me weep. Now I need a hockey-players-pounding-the-crap-out-of-each-other story to take the pain away.

I am not too proud to admit that this story brought tears.

I applaud those players!

I don't even LIKE baseball, and that brought a tear to my eye. So cool.

And nothing beats running in your own homerun.

THAT gives me such *HOPE* ... as strange as it may seem, for the future.
