If you've got Windows XP, for your own benefit do not install MS update KB932823.

It FIXES a problem with IE7 failing to download some files when using a Japanese language setting. It is noncritical, can be worked around, and will presumably have a corrected version out shortly.

It has CAUSED a BSOD error in half a dozen machines, to my personal knowledge alone, this morning, most with NVidia motherboards.

And if I know about 6 of them, that means there's probably 600,000 of them.

So save yourself the headache, and don't install this update today.

OK, I either need to thank you (My home card is an Nvidia) or figure out how to roll an update back, because I am not sure if I installed this one.

If it came out only today, then I didn't, and by preference I don't install IE-related updates unless I have to , so maybe I'm safe.

In every machine so far, the BSOD has either been
A) immediate and unending as the machine reboots over and over again
or
B) immediate and the update failed, so it happens again when the machine tries to update again.

And the update came out yesterday, meaning it's being pushed today.

It's almost certainly not affecting *all* NVidia MBs. It's just affecting some, and that's enough to cause me a few headaches.

PS: If you can boot into Windows, you can remove the update from Add/Remove Programs.

Uh oh. I got an automatic update last night or this morning (and finally figured out to turn off the automatic reboot, since I'm in the middle of a bunch of stuff). I guess I'd better hit Google to find out whether a Vaio is at risk (I really know very little about this machine -- it was handed to me by a friend who upgraded, and it runs *shrug*) before the next time I shut down.

I had that happen a couple days ago (only once though...) I seem to have automatically updated to version 3 of the patch now as of last night, maybe that is an "improved" version.

P.S. Have an ASUS motherboard.

I suggest not having downloaded IE 7 in the first place... ;)

Well, I guess I'm fortunate that Windows Update has not been working since shortly after I set up my shiny new PC (with its NVidia mobo)...

You should fix that. Windows Update is a very good thing, on average.

It's just, once in a while, they break something.

IE7 is a much better browser than 6. If you're going to have an IE (and you ARE going to have one, if you're running Windows) 7 is the better choice.

I wonder if this one is related to the thing in Service Pack 3 that broke my dad's machine a week or so ago. I dunno what went wrong, but I tried to install it twice and it wouldn't even boot - I had to uninstall SP3 from safe mode.

Thanks for the heads-up. I don't think I have an nVidia mobo (think it's asus), and I know I don't have IE7 anyway, since I never use IE anyway, but I will make sure I avoid that update on general principles.

Oh definitely, it's a wonderful tool. It's only been broken for about a week, fortunately. I just need to figure out what's gone wrong (and if it requires a Windows install I may scream, as it's taken me a good seven months to get the hardware for this kit working - long, dull story).
