An initiative campaign to repeal Maine’s gay rights law and put in place roadblocks to gay marriages and adoptions is being abandoned, leaders of the campaign said Thursday.

"We’re pulling the plug," said Michael Heath, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine. Heath said the evangelical group failed to attract voter, volunteer and financial support it needed to continue its campaign.

The group collected only a third of the 15,000 voters' signatures it had set as a goal for primary election day June 10, said Heath. He added said that potential volunteers "don't want to be aligned with bigotry and homophobia and hatred,"

I mean, I'm sorry their hard work didn't pan out.

Did... did he just admit to being a bigoted homophobe?

I wondered the same thing, but reading the article it sounds like he only conceded that his opponents (yay team!) had successfully associated those ideas with his effort and thus poisoned the volunteer pool against him. That is, I don't think he quite got as far as realizing that the association was so successful because the campaign was bigotry and homophobia and hatred -- it looks like he came >this< close to having the clue-bat actually connect.

one of the biggest issues with the christian group about gay marriage was their idea that gay marriages "corrupt the sanctity of marriage". So he could probably make that statement while feel like he isn't a homophobic bigot.

Gay marriage isn't corrupting the sanctity of marriage, the movie "what happened in vegas" corrupts the sanctity of marriage.

Well, we all know Maine would secede and join Canada if it was allowed.

Pfft.

That's Vermont, actually.

Their junior senator and former single congressman (Bernie Sanders) is a socialist.

No, really:

Really, does it get much more Canadian than that?

Oh, good.

Mainers have their wackiness, but the general commonality is an undertone of "hey, none of my business, as long as it's not on my lawn, knock yerself out."

Typical Mainers spend a lot of time making fun of Canada. We recycle all the old Polish jokes and aim them at the French (Canadians).

The real question is, does he REALISE he's just admitted to it?

Unfortunately, that's quite true. Me, having a French-ish last name (I'm a Belgie, not a Frenchie, so to speak), recall hearing lots of such jokes tossed in my direction as a kid.

Hey, I didn't know there was another Mainer on [livejournal.com profile] theweaselking's friends list!

I am very, very proud of the state in which I was born and currently live. For the record, when I was Chief News Photographer for a Fox affiliate here (no relation to cable's Fox News; in fact, we were a CNN affiliate news-wise) I had to interview Michael Heath quite frequently... he's not much older than myself, but was creepy from day one. The man is cut from the same cloth as David Duke. What's worse - he truly believes what he says.

Scary.

I am glad he finally saw the writing on the wall, in at least this one aspect.

Thank gods. Step by step we are gaining equality and the haters are slowlyu but surely loosing ground. i wish there weren't so many people who seem to have nothing ebtter to do than spray hate and venom and actively try to hurt their fellow humans when they gain nothing from it at all - when they're not even tangentally involved! But at least they're having a narrower appeal

And isn't it shocking how people don't want to be associated with homophobes? How surprising is that?
