Wow. It never ceases to amaze me how it's not really a tragedy when a moron takes their own life because of some stupid crap they misheard.

That's incredibly upsetting. :( To be fair, I wasn't really a critical thinker at the age of 16 either. Not to say I took everything as writ, but I was properly more a doubter than skeptic. University is where I properly learned to be critical.

The media bombardment she received was the direct result of uncritical thinking too [1], and presumably the people who built up that bombardment were adults.

Yeah, if I were her dad I'd be blaming my daughter's suicide on the media too.

Why bother to look any closer to home? That might hurt.

Yes, I know. I keep forgetting that for all it's progress, India is still behind in certain areas.

Fuck that, have you seen the US? No need to talk about how brown people are "behind in certain areas".

Oy. Skin colour has nothing to do with this. Most people I've met from India are incredibly brilliant (granted, 90% of immigrants allowed into Canada have a university degree, but still). I keep thinking India *is* a developed nation.

I'm still assuming that, should the LHC actually create a runaway gravitational singularity1, we're all going to die anyway, and it's probably not going to hurt very much (I expect it'd be over pretty quickly).

So why jump the gun and kill yourself in a way that will probably hurt more than being consumed by an emergent black hole ?

1. which it isn't going to.

Killing yourself to avoid dying goes well beyond lack of critical thinking. I too believe there is something else at work in such a case.

One of my friends was taking an upper-level physics course, and there's a passage in it that basically (for sciency reasons I can't comprehend) our universe could, at any time, "pop"--that's the way he laymanized it for me. We wouldn't just die,but cease to ever exist. This could happen any friggin' time at all and with no warning. If physics is gonna kill us, it's gonna happen. = P No reason to get bent out of shape over it.

this is my understanding too, but the odds of the universe suddenly ceasing to exist is /way/ down the bellcurve, so i think you're safe booking that holiday.

Oh, it happens all the time, but it pops right back into place again. Except without that pen you had a second ago.
