I don't get it. When i was little parents used to do this all the time. Is this a crime now? Windows were down, doors were locked ... was she gone for hours? I didn't see any mention of that in the article.

Though 19 year olds with 3 kids clearly have issues to start with. No argument there.

#1: It's considered cruelty to animals to leave them in a car in a lot of weather.

#2: There's a big difference between leaving a 6-8+ year old and leaving *more than one toddler*.

#3: Arresting her really does seem to be a fucked up solution to the problem, that won't solve or fix anything. That's part of why I linked it - the WTF factor isn't just that she left the kids in the car.

Our parents did a lot of stuff that you can't do now. Society changes.

If it were Nebraska, she could just drop them off forever, and then go shopping whenever she felt like it.

It is a crime because it is neglect contributory to a crime - similar in concept to knowing a ladder is (subtly and nearly-invisibly) broken, but leaving it standing up against a fence/building where it could be used; Or, leaving one's car keys in the ignition whilst one goes inside "for just a minute" to run an errand.

Even if the foreseeable crime/mishap in each of those cases does not happen, a reasonable person can see what the crime or mishap would be, and can therefore be expected to take steps to prevent such from happening.

I was about to say, you don't leave children under five alone for any length of time unless they're asleep and even then you check on them.

Plus I'm sure it's still pretty warm in Florida; kids can overheat/dehydrate easily.

Yup.

And eventually, though it may be legal to drop ze kids off, it will be possible for a private entity to put a few dozen base pairs and a few dozen base pairs together, figure out that A dropped B off to be a welfare case, and conclude a lack of credit-worthiness to A.

Or to B.

Or to both.

I suppose. I wasn't 100% clear on how old the children were, but it does say they were under 5. I guess I'm wondering if this was her running in to pay for gas or get a soda, or her going into the mall. Big difference, in my mind.

"Partly down" != Down.
Dogs get killed by being left in cars with the windows cracked. "Oh, but they'll be fine, I left the windows open" BBBZZT WRONG.

Toddlers are
* generally held to be more valuable to society and to their carers than dogs,
* just as likely to eat random crap and choke to death when unsupervised, and
* MORE likely to drop dead from heat, because immature animals of any description are worse at heat regulation than adults
* possibly slightly less likely to be stolen by random strangers, possibly slightly more, depends on the dog you're comparing the kid to.

Locking car doors does not stop people from stealing your shit, your dog, or your kid - someone who's willing to steal things, animals, or people is willing to break a window to do it.

It stops your kids from wandering off, but it also makes it harder for people to RESCUE them when they're dying from heat stroke.

Things change if you have an older kid, but it's pretty clear cut stupid with toddlers.

The arresting is a bit of overkill, unless it was "take her down to the police station and scare her straight, then release her on her own recognizance to go home for dinner" kind of arresting.

I got a blowjob from her once at a local nightclub...she told me she was 25 and had no kids...I knew she was full of shit..After we fooled around in the parking lot, I ditched her at a denny's and stuck her with the bill (About 50$ of food) when I was done with her.

I knew there was a reason I never felt bad for screwing her over...

She's 19 and she has 3 of them. That, alone, guarantees the upper bound on the age of the oldest one, and the other two *have to* be at least a year younger, each.

Meaning, toddlers.

I remember that one, I kind of understood where the dad was coming from. If he'd waited, CPS would've taken them later AND possibly sent him to jail.

It was at least long enough for someone to notice the children were gone, maybe wait a minute or two for her to come back, call the police, wait for the police to show, and then have the police find her still inside the store. All that together seems like more than a few minutes though I'm just speculating.

True enough (I suppose if we were dealing with a situation where a cop watched her go into a store for a minute and arrested her, there might have been a mention of it in the article). Regardless, I'm not saying it was responsible (hell, I doubt most 19 year olds with 3 kids are responsible) but I think it's interesting that when I was a kid this sort of thing wasn't abnormal and now it's news. That's a big change.

The upper bound on the eldest is something like 9 or a bit over, though. Not a toddler.

Utterly fucked up in many ways if that were the case (more so than already), but possible.

Now, I will go so far as that it is *likely* the eldest is no more than 5 or 6.
