7th grade student asks his teacher what "change" means in the sense that Barack Obama uses it.

The teacher replies that it's an acronym: "Come Help A Nigger Get Elected"

Guess the state.

Hey, gotta grant them that the authorities involved did a pretty good job in punishing the teacher of prejudice.

Guess The State is *always* either Florida or Ohio.

This actually made my jaw drop. I thought that was a useless saying until now.

He's not fired, sadly, just suspended for 10 days, transferred to the adult highschool and "released" from being the coach.

I think something's bothering me about his being disciplined for using the word nigger. Obviously that's an important part of it, and that alone is worth getting smashed over the head with a big book. . . but the UTTER inappropriateness of the entire response is mind boggling.

It wasn't just a casual derogatory reference to Obama but an utter trivialization of his entire platform (at which point, calling him a nigger is just rubbing salt in there).

It doesn't look like he was. The article said suspended without pay.

"Howard was first suspended on September 29th with pay. Wednesday he was given a written reprimand. He will also have to write a letter of apology to the students involved."

"[A]n utter trivialization of his entire platform" probably would count as free political expression, though, where this didn't.

"I don't get it...why are people complaining? 50 years ago he'd be strung up on a tree; can't you people be happy with the progress that's been made? And learn to take a joke?"

(put into quotes because there's always that dumb ass who thinks I'm being serious)

saying you don't like obama is one thing. Calling him the n-word is something else entirely.

the first is just irksome and inappropriate. the second creates an atmosphere of fear and hostility.

Expect that a LOT more if Obama gets himself elected. Myself, I say what a whole lot of other people in Chicago say -- it will only be because he was an exceptional black man, near-perfect, that he even had a chance. More flawed African-Americans still need not apply, because the moment there's an excuse...

That´s because lots of people who say that are serious.

I´m not at all implying that you are of course. Just reminding you that people who misinterpret your tone aren´t necessarily dumbasses because you still have people walking around saying that exact thing and meaning it.

I've had people who knew I was being sarcastic still get aggro about it, because "omg what if someone didn't know". And it was a hell of a lot more obvious than this one.

(and believe me, I know people really do say that and mean it...it's just hard for me to comprehend why they think it's okay to do that)
