Zoo animals have an unfortunate habit of rejecting their young, either out of stress, or because they themselves were human-raised and don't have a clue what to do with the baby.
Ah.. that makes sense. My main puzzlement was their mention that ones raised in captivity do really well if released into the wild. If not having been raised by a mother would affect their ability to parent, they could reject their young in the wild, which just exacerbates the existing population problem. Unless.. they're only releasing males.
