A sculpture of an enormous bronze-coloured shoe has been erected in Iraq to honour the journalist who threw his shoes at ex-US President George W Bush.

The sofa-sized artwork was formally unveiled in Tikrit, hometown of late Iraqi ruler Saddam Hussein.

Artist Laith al-Amari insisted it was not a political work, but a "source of pride for all Iraqis".

Not political? Who is he trying to fool? If it is merely a "source of pride", does that imply that all foreigners should expect to dodge flying footwear the minute they set foot in Iraq? Is it the equivalent of being adorned with a flower necklace on arrival in Hawaii?

This is probably the first time a shoe has been a point of pride in an Islamic country.

I'm not saying that Iraqis are not proud of the journalist's shoe-throwing protest, I'm saying that when you throw your shoes at a politician in protest against his policies, it is definitely a _political_ statement.

The shoe-throwing incident was a fitting tribute to the Bush presidency.

I can't help but recall that the French made a couple of Statues of Liberty so they could have one for us and keep one for themselves. (I know, that's not exactly how it worked, but it's close enough for my purpose here.)

I would be thrilled if the Iraqi people would gift the USA with a giant bronze shoe. Just sayin'.
