Having grown up in the South, I used to think so too, but consistently, the specifically religious nuts John finds tend to be Ohioans, and the bug fuck random crazy nuts tend to be Floridians.
Ahh, it turns out she was homeless. This story has more info, including a picture of the perp: http://www.freep.com/article/20090217/NEWS01/90217011/
1: I found it hard to believe that a non-prostitute would get into a strange man's car, allow herself to be driven an hour away, and then let herself be immobilized somehow. I hadn't considered the homeless option, but that one makes sense.
2: I enjoy having context to my news stories, not superficial AP bullshit.
1: Examine your preconceptions, especially when they turn out to be wrong. I personally find it a valuable exercise.
2: There is no context I could imagine that would justify depriving a woman of her freedom without due process of law, robbing her of her dignity in the process, and then holding a Bible up as justification.
-- Steve really doesn't see the use of handcuffs, gags, and limited calorie and water intake as signs of actual compassion, either...
1: Nah, I'm still pretty sure that most of the time when a woman gets into a strange man's car and allows herself to be driven far away, there is going to be sex involved. I'm actually not 100% convinced that there wasn't an offer of sex in this case, but the Free Press article provides a plausible context that doesn't involve sex.
2: I don't think the purpose of context is to justify the actions of anyone involved, they just complete the picture and provide an accurate account. For the record, I think the guy's a nut and did a terrible thing. If anything, the context makes me more certain of that.
