Interesting... because the Recluse's venom is necrotic. So this guy's been in a wheelchair for 20 years, because nobody thought to retest his reactions after the initial trauma of the accident?
My guess is that the spider was misidentified. There are some spiders that have both necrotic and neurotoxin elements in their venom. I'd love to know the mechanism by which the neurotoxin aided his recovery, though.
The general opinion that I'm finding is that the bite had nothing to do with the recovery other then getting him in the hospital in the first place.
Even if something in the toxin stimulated nerve cell regrowth the odds of both sides a tear that bad being in just the right position to mesh up perfectly after 20 years are pretty much nil.
Ok.. So it doesn't say if the spider bite caused his legs to work again, or if it was merely coincidence? And if it was the spider bite, does that mean anything for other paraplegics?
To be fair, spinal damage rehab (and neuro rehab in general) has improved so incredibly much since his accident. It's possible he got a good enough treatment back then, and hasn't been in contact with the system since.
