US Marine jailed for claiming conscientous objector status.

Corps, despite regulations to the contrary, says that they don't think he is sincere and hence this is insurbordination and derelection of duty.

The thing about conscientious objector status, as I understand it, is that you have to prove that you're morally opposed to all war, regardless of the reason, not just opposed to a particular war for whatever particular reasons motivate it, but after reading the article, I think the Marines are being stupid and should let the guy clear mines.

He says he objects to fighting and killing, and he will not, under any circumstances, pick up a weapon and fight for religious reasons.

The fact that he's willing to support his country and corps in a noncombat role, even a dangerous noncombat role in a war zone, should bloody well tell them that he's not claiming this just to get out of the danger and the warzone.

Sheesh.
