Oh, I'd thought of that too (thought the timing was a bit convenient), but I was more commenting on the fact that Weasely waited until it was reasonably far enough through the day (globally) before making his "I ain't 'fraid of no Conficker!" post. As opposed to, say, posting it last night.

It's still a great April Fool's Day prank even if that was not the intent: look at the panic that this thing has engendered.

My family did something similar, to the point of seriously considering purchasing a shotgun. In hindsight, the shotgun would have been a good idea. Doomsday scenarios don't worry me; panicked people who riot/loot/attack their neighbours do.

Yeah, it's gently pinging to see if the server that's supposed to update it exists.

It has a LOT of different addresses to check though, so it's doing it on the sly and gently.

Duder probably won't set up the server for another month :D

Sadly, my cat thinks it's jolly good fun to sit on my tower and try to yank the power cable out of the PSU. First time she did it, I was in the middle of a WoW raid and didn't notice until my computer died. She looked so smug right before I started screaming.

You'd think the scare would have taught her but nooooooo...
