It's a Terry Pratchett thing. In the Discworld novels, any societal advance is described by its proponents as the rest of the world being "dragged kicking and screaming into the Century Of The Fruitbat!"

In the latest books it is pointed out that The Century Of The Fruitbat was *last* century, which makes me laugh a little more when I use it for gay rights, because yes, yes, the US (and other places, the US is just making more progress right now and so gets more mentiond) is finally catching up to THE LAST CENTURY.

Hunh. And here I was assuming it had to do with that fruit bat that hitched a ride on the last Shuttle's external fuel tank.

-- Steve probably needs to stop procrastinating on his Pratchett reading. It's been over a decade now...

Yeah, I thought we were now in the Century of the Anchovy.

Having recently reread *everything*, I strongly recommend catching up, especially Going Postal and Thud, two of his best I think.

The reread was John and [livejournal.com profile] torrain's fault, I got a quote wrong and had to look it up.

I wish I had some faith that there wasn't so many forces - including, sadly, the Obama admin - that are at best just going to sit down and not more or, worse, pull in the opposite direction

It should be added that "dragged kicking and screaming into the " is a standard British phrase; PTerry's merely riffing on it.

Standard in Canada, too. But the "fruitbat" part is Pratchett.

I love the one quote in there from the guy claiming the federal government "has a perfectly legal right" to limit marriage. Look at the Constitution, sir. See anything about marriage? I thought not. And all powers not specifically mentioned are reserved for the States.
