First: Hey, if the machines made that work, that's AWESOME.

Second: Morpheus was wrong about a lot of things, and his education is damn near nonexistent, being pulled from The Matrix as a child.

It's FAR more likely that the machines are using human brains as *spare processing nodes* (which explains things like dreaming, etc) and The Matrix is just there for pretty much the same reason our computers have CPU fans.

The first draft script had the massively parallel processing explanation. They changed it to the power thing because it was deemed too confusing.
