Is that visible ground-effect distortion under the tail, there? I didn't know that was possible!

A week of those feckers overflying my condo for the CNE air show pretty much drove me out of my mind as well.

No, no, the white water is just a distortion wake. I'm talking about the slightly back-curving light area in the air between the water and the back of the plane.

This is what they spend all day every day of the week practicing for though. They have a TON of training.

i'm from pensacola, home the blue angels... i also used to be married to an air force avionics tech, so i've seen the air force thunderbirds perform a lot. they are pussies compared to the blue angels.

i attribute it to the fact there are us marine pilots for the blues. those guys are crazy. that and the f-18 superhornet is a superior machine to the f-16.

I *Think* it is, and we're only seeing it because of the water that's outlining it... I *Think*- but I could very well be wrong! :)

Here's another one, that looks like the same place, but a slightly different angle, and much more clearly shows the water getting sucked into that space...

Seen that done in the then-USSR. Roughly same distance from the ground. Upside-down. Looking for video now, but I doubt I'll find it -- this was well before ubiquitous handheld video cameras.

It always burns me up to hear people say that the Snowbirds should transition to CF-18s.[1] The CF-18 would seriously degrade the show.

As for inverted low passes, though, I think it's cheating to use an engine. Manfred Radius, based in Ontario, does a wicked inverted low pass in an unpowered aircraft. Skip to time 4:30 to see it:

And that, kids, is what "Energy Management" is all about.

[1] - Fun fact: The shadow canopy on Canada's CF-18s is a registered trademark, and we use international intellectual propery laws to prevent other countries from copying the genius idea.
