Steam Deal: Next 40 minutes, Torchlight, $5.

Torchlight is Diablo II, with an updated interface. And a different story and stuff, but don't fool yourself. The gameplay is, barring the aforementioned well-needed interface improvements, Diablo II.

For $5, totally worth the money.

Torchlight was $10 a couple weeks ago, then it went to $10 again with the big Steam sale, and now it's down to $5. I'm assuming that next week, they just send somebody to your house who punches you in the face and then installs Torchlight on your PC while you're knocked out.

That would be an awesome marketing trick.

I assume they're just doing it to get the word out, so once they release the MMO version they'll recoup any losses. Like TWK said about that other game a couple weeks ago, anyone interested in Torchlight probably already bought it at $20. The sales are just picking up the stragglers.

My only real problem with TL is the comicy look of everything -- It's just not a graphical style I like. The game itself is pretty fun, though.

That is kind of funny coming from a former WoW player.

WoW doesn't look comic-y. It looks cartoony. There's a distinct difference. That's why it looks so demented whenever Bugs Bunny teams up with Superman to save the world.

Thank you! I didn't feel like getting into a whole Thing about it, but I agree. Except perhaps with Bugs Bunny + Superman. That's weird.

While there's merit to that notion, there's a LOT of stuff on sale on Steam right now. For example, if you haven't picked up Borderlands yet, it's down to $34, and it's highly recommended for anyone who likes loot whoring and/or boom, headshots. I get more the idea that Steam really wants you to buy shit from them this holiday season, and the low-price yet well-reviewed Torchlight makes a good loss-leader.

If I may?

It's Diablo II and Beyond Good and Evil grooving down with some beer and a symphony orchestra.

Loving this game. it works perfectly on Crossover.

It was an okay game that was terribly, impossibly, unplayably bug-ridden.

Some people, when it came out, put up with the bugs enough to find the intriguing, interesting, engaging storyline.

I wasn't one of those people. I picked it up a couple of years later, and found the crashes and the failures unplayable.

I got 3-5 hours out of it before I gave up, and I very much liked the parts that weren't crashes and quest-logic failures. That's worth $2, to me.

I can forgive a lot (though it bugs the hell out of me) in terms of kludgy interface and general bugs. But a bug that makes the game (or part of it, in this case) *unwinnable* after you've invested tens of hours of your time? That's the sort of thing that makes me want to hunt down the company's QA team and kick them in the head. Repeatedly.

I have a friend who'd not only finished the game but written up a very detailed review of the process. I'm so very glad I didn't invest nearly as much time in the nightmare of STALKER. The saddest part for me is, I loved the book.

I've been wanting to get that since I saw the Penny Arcade cartoon about it, so that made me very happy.

And now I can't remember the title - but it's the movie the game STALKER is based on.
