The best sources for web design that I use in teaching that to my students say to use single-click for in-site links (who wants a million tabs or windows for the same site?) but target tabs/windows for outside links.
AHHHHHHH I hate it when a link spawns a new window. New tab, okay, if kind of annoying when I'm not expecting it. If I left-click, I want it opening in the tab I'm looking at. NEW WINDOW, NO. STOP FUCKING DOING THAT, WEB DESIGNERS.
Though it does seem to have died down since tabs became standard with IE, but JFC that was irritating as fuck even back in the days of single-pane browsers.
