Most people don't have the advantage of being able to use their own top-end purchased laptops at work, or, frankly, anything approaching state of the art.
1024x768 is the best my monitor at work handles.
My home PC is still at 1280x1024 because frankly, I don't like straining to read my display.
Even at 1280x1024, a 1000-pixel photo scrolls (a little) off the edge of my screen in my default friends-view layout, which is how I read EVERYTHING, because visiting individual journals subjects me to the horrors of other peoples' layouts.
