Safari, at least on Mac OS, says in the status bar 'Go to "[URL]"' or 'Open [URL] in a new window'. Likewise, if you hold down command or shift-command, that changes to "Open [URL] in a new tab" or "Open [URL] in a new tab behind the current one", so you know what'll happen before you click.
Now, if you use different mouse buttons for different behaviour, that won't be as useful, but telling you that the link will open in a different window is something that could usefully be stolen for Firefox.
