Religious groups protesting topless sunbathing law in California.

So, let's see. Arguments FOR allowing topless unbathing:
1. It's inherently sexist to punish it, because a man doing the exact same thing is doing something perfectly legal
2. A recent ruling on a different law means that a woman arrested for gonig topless is charged and registered as a sex offender.

Arguments AGAINST topless sunbathing:
"We already have too many sexual assaults in society. If the state encourages women to show their breasts to men and boys at public beaches and parks, inappropriate treatment of women and girls will only worsen."

That's a direct quote from the article. "If women are attractive, THEY WILL BE RAPED AND IT IS THEIR FAULT".

Good thing you're saving people from that horrible persecution, eh?

As far as I know, women can legally go topless in Ohio (or, at least, in Columbus).

There's a nude beach here, and I haved heard of any rapes that have occurred on or near it.

Ottawa's got legal topless beachgoing. Apparently, for people who look damn good doing it, the biggest problems are the appreciative looks and the lack of support - and those looks are the same ones you get in a bikini.

There are good reasons for modesty laws, Thomasson said -- "to protect the innocence of women and girls[...]"

Because not only are men evidently incapable of behaving like civilized humans in the face of a breast, they have no innocence to protect.

I'm going to go climb down off my pedestal, and see if JL still has that nicely polished shovel.

Yeah, you know, I can't get over how insulting attitudes like that are to BOTH sexes. Women need our "innocence" (I dunno about you, but I haven't been innocent for two thirds of my life at least) protected, and men apparently are all slavering beasts who lose every semblance of self-control at the mere sight of a naked breast.

I mean, good god. Having seen more people naked than I ever care to (years of Pagan festivals and Burning Man), I can honestly state that there's nothing inherently titillating about it. In far too many cases, quite the reverse.
