I look at this, and have a mild feeling of worry; in recent years, the amount of violent rhetoric has gone up in my country. It targets minorities, and in roundabout way (or sometimes directly) swipes at women as well, many times putting those two together and painting women as evil protectors of said unacceptable minorities (read: people who are darker than the base color of a newspaper). And that things have gone wrong because of women, all of it being their fault. Femi-Nazis, cock-choppers... I have seen quite a lot, with people fighting against imaginary feminists in their mind, with no connection to the real world.

I find it terrifying, yet darkly twisted considering that my country was amongst the first ones to grant full suffrage to women (the right to vote and represent) in 1906. When I was a schoolkid, people were proud of this fact. Now, I've seen and heard more and more rants about how women should not vote, on account of being inferior, less capable, emotional, maternal, coddling those strangers seeking for shelter. From terrifying people elected to the Parliament.

In conclusion, the fact that this day, the act of a sick mind lashing out in violence shares the Independence Day with my country seems strangely apt in today's bizarre climate of opinions.

And imagine the defensive outcry of the racist nitwits when it turned out that heck, the Murdering Dude had actually written in glowing terms about them and their politics, with a suggestion that there has been communication between him and the said people.

That is, some of the top names of those terrifying people who got elected to the Parliament.

Certainly, they are underdogs in media, and get chewed up quite a lot. But... not every underdog is right and they most definitely aren't right.

It chills me that during the Independence Day celebrations, certain forums went raging hot, and spewed out stuff like "somebody should shoot people X, Y and Z", "we must start posting bounties on Insert Ethnic Group Here, that would save money in the long run", "race traitors must be culled, let's place rewards on their heads" and shit like that. I can only hope that the police is already investigating those threats...
