As above. If your flash plugin is crashing Firefox (say, badly enough that you can't watch a YouTube video), I'd be switching to another browser, even if it's just temporarily. I use Chrome as my main browser, but occasionally switch between Firefox and Safari for different plugins/features and to run some websites whose code doesn't work properly within Chrome.
Flash is not used for .gif playback on Macintoshes (or any other platform that I'm familiar with)
Could it be a banner or other third party content on the page causing the crash? Anyway, it's Flash that sucks and it has nothing to do with the platform.

I realise that as a Mac user, you're not used to "computer" things and you don't have the ability to "understand" a problem. That's okay! All that means is that when adults are speaking, you should maybe remember that you don't know what they're talking about and not interrupt, and never worry your pretty little head about what your "software" is doing behind your back. It's the Apple way!

I will happily take your word for it that it isn't a Flash issue. I never stated it was. I frequently investigate, report and solve software failures, when those failures - be it on Mac OS or linux - actually affect my ability to do my work. this does not. I generally don't use firefox anyway, so it's of no relevance to me at all.

Other Firefox For ToyOS users have not reported any problems at all - which tells you, outright, that it's not a general issue or an application issue.
All Firefox For RealOS users, including, say, me on 3 different OSes, have reported no issue at all, which tells you, outright, that it's only POSSIBLY an issue for ToyOS users. And other ToyOS users are telling you that it's not an issue for them, which means, horror of horrors, there's something wrong with your machine.

I don't *hate* Apple products, I have *contempt* for them as sub-par inferior products, and I have extra contempt for people who defend their inadequacies as "features" rather than admitting that they're inferior products aimed solely at casual users. It's an important distinction.
OSX has performed quite well at everything I've wanted to do on it, and I'm far from a casual user. Just because you can't be bothered to figure out a new system doesn't make it automatically inferior.
Also, I've never had an OS-specific issue with animated gifs, either.
The reason I claimed its a flash bug is because the shockwave/flash process spawned by firefox is what goes to 100% cpu utilization. When I end that process, the image is replaced by a failure message.
I accept that that process could be doing other things besides flash and possibly shockwave.
I'm thinking it's either a flash ad somewhere else on the page or the animation loading triggers the firefox memory leak of doom.
First thing I install on all new machines is Firefox. The next thing is flashblock. I am trying to persaude the rest of the house to do this, but apparently autoplaying videos on background tabs at full volume aren't annoying.
