On the last two disks I had problems with, I was pleasantly surprised to see that S.M.A.R.T. controllers were doing their job. Yeah the thing wouldn't boot, but SMART caught the problem well before it became unrecoverable. Ghosted the disk to a new one and went merrily on my way.
