All the commentary about Mistimed Month-Late Thanksgiving brings into stark relief two facts about Americans:

#1: Americans can turn ANYTHING into a religion.
#2: You all desperately need a holiday. At least a few *unstressed* days off.

What are the odds of someone managing to add a "take a day off, but don't see your family because they'll wind you up" holiday to the existing US calendar, though?

Hmm. National introvert day? These (http://damngooddoormats.indiemade.com/product/rude-doormat-fuck-outdoor-mature) as (in)appropriate decorations?

We're Americans. Existing is stressful for us.

Maybe if it was pitched as a household maintenance kind of thing? "Oh, I'm sorry we can't come over/have you over on National DIY Repairs Day, guys. We've just got so much to do. *goes home to lie down and relax*"

conversation i had with 10+ people:

"dense, what are you doing for Thanksgiving?"
me: "nothing. i got a frozen pizza, bottle of wine, some movies. hang out. call my mom."
"oh, no! do you want to come to my Thanksgiving meal instead?"
me: "no."

i slept til noon, too.

admittedly if i had a spouse or children i would probably have had to alter plans. sleep til 10 and make 3 pizzas, or something. but if i get a day off, i'm goddam acting like it. these Big Thanksgiving people are nuts.

It used to be the days after Thanksgiving were low-stress, but the big box stores saw to that. People are already out shopping.

I do sometimes wonder if Americans would be more relaxed if they had more holiday days. I know I am!

Days off on national holdiays. Huh. I can almost remember what that was like...

I woke up this morning to a discussion of the over-under on how many people were going to be injured at Walmarts.

(The online sales are sometimes nice, mind.)

Exactly! It's not yet 9 a.m. on the west coast, I bet there are some tramplings already. And it's always Walmart, too.

To be fair, I think hosting a mid-size Thanksgiving with friends *is* pretty low-stress; if you plan well enough, it's pretty much just two hours of assembly on the day and setting timers, and people bring you a lot of booze/other food and hang out. It's pretty awesome.

(I would not object to more nice, unstressed holidays, though.)

Walmart deliberately and knowingly creates dangerous conditions, because those conditions inspire extra traffic to their store and the attitude that you MUST buy something.

The "danger" is simply not important to them, compared to the extra impulse to buy.

Aye. I'm very fond of the fact I get something like 37-40 days of holiday across the year in total.

Bah! There's 52 weeks in a year, and you get two days off EVERY WEEK! That's a hundred and four holiday days a year already! Workers are mollycoddled!

Canadian Thanksgiving lacks what is right and holy with proper holidays: guilt and obligation.

No, existing without things to stress about is stressful. It's the Christian we-need-to-be-persecuted-about-SOMETHING dynamic.

National DIY Repairs Day would be a HUGE THING where, if you didn't display what you were going to fix in advance, and then didn't have it fixed after the fact? Would be a disgrace.

Which would lead to people collecting to do ONE MAJOR "DIY" repair for a group.

And that group would be familial because, what, you're not going to help your father with the garage?

Which would lead to National DIY Repair Day being "yet another familial holiday where you disappoint your parent's cousins."

Well, yeah, but maybe it'd take a few years to get to that point, and everyone could use the breather. And, you know, a through spring cleaning (claimed) could probably hold people off for a bit.

I took the whole week off and was a deliberate Thanksgiving orphan. I did zero projects around the house (I had grandiose and erroneous ideas about my industriousness. These projects were subsequently scrapped in favor of sitting around doing nothing.). I slept late everyday, I bought a turkey breast and stuffing and other dinner favorites. I called my family and said hey, and watched TV marathons and in general just held down the sofa. It was glorious. I would recommend this plan to others.

I want another week off.

The danger (or more generally the unpleasant conditions) is a BONUS, because it keeps away anyone who doesn't desperately need to save money. It's classic price discrimination.

What you did with the marathon is so great! I do this every once in a while. I'm doing this now on my day off. I'm watching the television show My Big Fat Greek Life on DVD. Too bad this only lasted one season. I love the family and the restaurant. I'm also watching the television Wonderfalls on DVD. Too bad this only lasted one season also. I like the bar in the show. If you ever get the chance to watch these shows. Give them a chance. There are some very funny scenes in both television shows.

Due to my 12 hour days at my job schedule. I can go from working 3 days one week and then 4 days the next week. So I have this 2 week rotating schedule. Some weeks I work those hours and have the same days off. And some weeks I work overtime from an extra four hours that week. To I have 84 hours a week that I worked. So on the average month I have 17 days off. I love my job!
