They're really making Jon Stewart's job far too easy right now.

I honestly support gun ownership rights, I think that people should be allowed to have their own means of self-defense, and I don't think that assault rifle bans will actually change much since most crime is committed with handguns. But I really cannot stand most some large number (which may or may not be a majority) of gun advocates...

While the Hitler bit is pretty spot, as someone said it certainly could have made the Warsaw uprising more interesting but... the Wehrmacht.
King was a gun owner and google tells me he had applied for conceal carry so, much like Ghandi I don't think he was really in favor of gun control. I have no idea what he was shot with but I'm guessing it was some sort of hunting rifle, something that is never on the table for any sort of serious gun control bill.

Too little, too late, but very brave and an inspiration to all oppressed peoples thenceforth.

Exactly. Because gun control isn't about saving lives. It's about control.

6009 people were killed using handguns in 2010
358 people were killed using ALL rifle types,
including semi auto 'assault weapons' in the same period,
which account for a small fraction of that small fraction.

If the intention is public safety, why aren't we focusing on handguns?

Yes, it was a pump-action hunting rifle - a Remington Gamemaster.
But Jon Stewart's "WTF??!!????" still holds.

Well, first, because handguns aren't the problem in the massacres that have brought the most recent public scrutiny.

Second, you do make an excellent point in favour of handgun restriction, and everywhere else in the world shows that handgun restrictions do greatly reduce handgun deaths - so I'm glad to see you coming out in favour of restricting them as well.
