Who taxes food in the first damned place? Talk about a regressive tax!

That was my first thought. Thanks, Kansas.

Most of the US does... Not just Kansas. Near as I can tell it is more rare NOT to tax food.

Which does not make this man not a waste of air. He is. But not for that. He is a waste of air because he wants to tax food but not billionaires income.

Roughly a quarter of US states have some form of tax on groceries: http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales.pdf

Everything is taxed ~5% in VA, though some basic food products are only taxed 2.5% -- and some localities add another "meals tax" to convenience and restaurant foods.

That's cheap!

Everything except raw ingredients and baby/infant food gets VAT at 20% here in the UK.

The hook, though, is that the tax in VA also applies to raw ingredients and formula. Massively regressive.

-- Steve's home and native land has a harmonised sales tax of 13%; 7% to the provincial government, 6% to the federal. However it too exempts what it deems to be essential goods and services like staple foods and rent.

Well, we have Federal income taxes, state income taxes, state sales tax, state property taxes (on any dwelling and vehicle that resides in that state), and county property taxes (same deal), to name a few... and each varies from county to county and state to state.. plus deductions from your pay for Medicare and Social Security and whatnot..

Yeah, but they're all very low, and disproportionately paid by poor people.

(It's one of the reasons your country has no money for infrastructure maintenance.)

That, and all the military spending (a lot of it on stuff we don't need/want)....

The other day, I was playing Cards Against Humanity with an obvious Republican... a card came up that made her say, "Actually, war is good for the economy." And my friend says, under his breath, "Depends on what point in the war you are in." I said, it depends on who you are.
