Anne Rice claims that white people who say "nigger" are the real victims, that those objecting to white people calling non-white people "niggers" are "a lynch mob", and that said white people are "being lynched".
She goes on to claim that the US is "deeply, violently prejudiced against white southerners".
Wow.
Just.... wow.

Date: 2013-06-25 04:58 pm (UTC)Oh, wait, I already know what he'll say: "What?"
(I do know southerners who have deliberately gotten rid of their accents because of assumptions people have made about their intelligence...ironically, Rice's delusional bullshit stands as evidence that this might have been a good move.)

Date: 2013-06-25 05:44 pm (UTC)I'm actually offended by that article where the writer pretty much calls that women working in IT should be target practice for nerds to train their social skills. Holy ****. I work in IT, and the last thing I want to happen is a bunch of people thinking that I might put out if they beg enough.

Date: 2013-06-25 05:56 pm (UTC)Because, you know, obviously no white person could ever be disgusted on principle by that behaviour, and certainly could never care about or love or share a family with an I-cannot-even-fucking-type-that, and even if they were they'd obviously be used to such comments and should be understanding and forgiving of it. So only a rabble-rousing shrike would dare to kick up a fuss over that, and be hurtful enough to bring it out to where non-white people could hear about it.
(Oh, and I bet the words "looking for an excuse to be offended" come up somewhere.)
I'm going to go throw up a little in my mouth, now.

Date: 2013-06-25 08:14 pm (UTC)But that's the deep end - and a whole different deep end where she declares how ok the n-word is and the terribad awful plight of whiter southerners. Methinks even with her fanpoodles, Ms. Rice is going to find most people will ruefully tolerate the first kind of deep end diving, but are going to treat her with the contempt she deserves over the latter. I hope anyway. Some people at least

Date: 2013-06-25 10:24 pm (UTC)Just in case if you ever need to make it clear to ignoramuses, here's an explanation you can copy-paste for them:
Criticism: "Saying horribly racist things and doing horribly racist and sexist things is not cool." "Private companies can and will fire people who cannot act as spokespeople for their brand, especially if that person is likely to damage it seriously. This is not protected by Freedom of Speech. I believe this is called 'free markets'." "Based on timeline of events that have happened during Deen's lifespan, it is obvious that something just doesn't add up, if she's this slow on uptake that blurting racist jokes and commentary is not OK anymore (and it never was, from a moral point of view). She really should know better."
Lynching: An act of mob "justice", where people vent out their fury on someone; the person targeted may be an innocent one, or waiting for formal/proper justice in a jail cell. In some cases, the officials (who should be protecting them) actually give their approval to seizing of a person or persons. The mob will drag out the victim, and often inflicts other forms of abuse on them (everything from... well, you name it, they've probably done it to someone), followed by execution (often hanging or shooting) and having a general atmosphere of a macabre carnival, as people take souvenir photos or make their children watch how someone's life is snuffed out as torturously and terrifyingly as possible. The body is often burned or thrown to a river/lake/swamp, in which case the purpose is to hide the crime committed while letting The Other know what they've done, and this suggests that the bigots' command of the area is less powerful than they'd like it to be; if the body or bodies are left out (usually a public place well-within sight of Those Other People), it is a clear terrorist threat to them that unless they continue to toe the line, they're next, as no one will defend them. In some cases, the property of the victim(s) may be destroyed as a way to punish their family (arson is a common method).
Seeing how Paula Deen is still in one piece, in possession of her life, property, and general well-being, I believe that the Vampire Belle is dead wrong about calling this "lynching". And she, too, should know the difference.
Does she still live in New Orleans?

Date: 2013-06-26 06:31 am (UTC)...I just realized how difficult it it to describe the Amazon review incident without resorting to either traditionally gendered or ablist language. "Hysterical". "Breakdown". "Pitching a fit". Something. In any case.
Before this, the worst I'd heard about was her vituperative reaction to the bad Amazon reviews, and something about her making a very loud public point of not wanting Tom Cruise in the Interview With A Vampire movie and then publishing full-page retractions of her complaints in the newspaper. It seemed disproportionate, but not disgusting. And then I heard about the fan-poodling[1], and I understand it was incited.
But yeah, just reread the way she's throwing the word "lynched" around, and her justifications, and I think this is a whole different level of bad. O.O

[1] Due a an evening discussion, the acts of fans throwing themselves furiously against critics of what they are fans of is now permanently associated with this term in my mind. Also, John kept making funny little "yip" noises as the images developed in my brain. Also, poodles should probably not wear black lipstick and gothy eye makeup.
Also I need to sleep.
