Reading this beautiful essay made me the happiest I have probably been all day. Just brilliant. Thank you for passing it along.

I grew up socially awkward. I am also horribly shy.

People who have this problem tend to be very smart in other areas, indicating an ability to learn.

I learned how to behave. It is a valuable toolbox.

(I also started RPGs back when TSR had just switched to dice and paper from entrails and clay tablets. So I portray an outgoing, comfortable person. This has never failed me.)

Role playing is a powerful techique that works well to reshape behavior. Act confident and you will become confident. Which is also why you may not want to trust a good actor, they are excellent at pretending to be someone else.

*salute* Exactly this.

Social skills are skills which require education and practice. More so (sometimes FAR more so) for people on the autism spectrum than for neurotypicals, but that doesn't make them impossible to learn.
