It sounds like the article's author should talk to a director... Monster Alice and I once saw a "Zulu adaption" of Macbeth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMabatha) that worked quite well.
Not sure his Oxford friend was right, though. The England of today is about as foreign to Shakespeare's England as the America of today.
I still haven't finished reading it (I'm a bit busy) but every time I come back to it I hit a few more gems. "I stopped being a storyteller and took out my notebook and demanded to be told more about these two causes of madness" just makes me laugh.
I liked the part at the end where they metaphorically pat him on the head and tell him to bring them more stories so they can tell him what they really mean...
