20 some years ago, when the internet was creaky and clunky, and there was this thing called newsgroups, some people from alt.fan.pratchett got to go out and have dinner with PTerry on a couple of occasions when he was in Melbourne. He was probably jetlagged, certainly exhausted from book signings in a cellar, and didn't have anything to gain from being nice to these folks - we were all absolutely devoted fans and likely to scrimp and save to buy books as fast as they came out. But he was dragged out nonetheless to resteraunts within the budget of poor uni critters at the end of a long day and fanned at.
He listened to people chatter, and he spoke when asked questions and he was bought dinner and he wasn't distant and he didn't lecture - he was just part of the group, not affable necessarily, but engaged.

He didn't have to, but he did, and it was lovely.
And now I've made myself sad.
