Jan. 14th, 2016 10:05 pmAnglican Church excommunicates *THEIR LARGEST SOURCE OF FUNDING*.
Because, y'see, the American branch of the Anglicans is less bigoted than the Official State Church Of Great Britain, and the Anglicans simply aren't having that. So they want to starve themselves, because they'd rather starve than be good people.

Date: 2016-01-15 04:40 am (UTC)*cough* no such thing. Church of England and Church of Wales are both Anglican but separate churches, Church of Scotland is Presbytarian, the Scottish Episcopal Church is tiny (like less than 100K total including lapsed).
It's the worldwide Anglican Communion that has suspended the the US branch from some functions, the CofE is still "In Communion" with them. I foresee a schism relatively quickly with the African grouping going off their own way as the CofE is, slowly, making some progress in the area (not good progress but one of the best known vicars in the country was in the Communards first).
Watching the CofE tie itself in knots in the consultation then passing of our equal marriage laws was, um, interesting "We demand these exclusions written into law" Govt: "OK, thanks, well do that ... here's the legislation, look, all those exclusions in nice black and white" CofE: "Why are you making us look homophobic?!!??!" Govt: Um, y'know that public consultation we held in which you submitted this response...
But yeah, it's a trainwreck, but fairly sure Welby was forced into it because he lost a vote. Not that I actually care personally, but several friends do.

Date: 2016-01-15 11:52 am (UTC)I know the Episcopalian desire to remain in the Anglican Communion is strong, as evidenced by ... well, the fact that they've stayed there for so long. My money's on their contiuing to remain a part of it, if only not to leave the Communion to the bigots. But I'm willing to be wrong on that.
All of which is to say, "they'd rather starve than be good people" is a brilliant turn of phrase about this, and may I borrow it?

Date: 2016-01-15 02:57 pm (UTC)1) I thought CoE was the official state church of the UK, not just England.
2) I thought "Church Of England" and "Anglican" were basically synonyms, like "LDS" and "Mormon" or "Dawkins Fan" and "bag of dog poop, on fire". And "Episcopal" is what Anglican churches call themselves in place where "English church, from England. Glory Britannia!" doesn't play well.

Date: 2016-01-15 10:13 pm (UTC)2) Appears until relatively recently that would be actually correct, Anglican Church of Canada::which is actually news to me, but there's a lot of history there and there are now Anglican churches in areas that have no historic ties to the UK, etc. So the Lambeth Conference and similar global groupings are avowedly the Anglican Communion, the Church of England is one bit of it.
(and because of our weird constitutional setup I have to know this stuff because of the links the CofE has within the actual Government of the UK—can't abolish something if you don't understand the details)
