When I first heard that he was in the Hitler Youth, I was like WTF are the Catholics thinking? Then I found out that he was in it when it was mandatory and that he ended up deserting from the wehrmacht.
The exact progression of events is unclear, as might be expected after 60 years. I don't believe there's hard evidence either way, beyond that HJ membership was mandatory and that he was a member and a member of the German armed forces for a time.
