Americans pass a law making it a crime to take underage girls across state lines to get abortions without parental consent.

The bill also imposes a 24-hour waiting period for young women who travel to another state for an abortion, in some cases even if they are accompanied by their parents. Supporters characterize the measure as pro-family, saying it will prevent abusive boyfriends and others from taking vulnerable young women across state lines to receive "secret abortions" against their will.

Representative Christopher H. Smith, Republican of New Jersey, said the bill was necessary to prevent "abortion mills" from luring young girls across state lines by advertising in states like his, where there are no notification laws.

Is anyone else wondering WHAT PLANET these people are living on?

I've got a link to a claim that the Republicans were editing the official record to claim that the defeated amendments protected "sexual predators" when they did not, alongside this claim:
When the House Democrats such as Rep. Slaughter protested the rewrite by GOP staffers, the Chairman of the Rules committee replied: "You don't like what we wrote about your amendments, and we don't like what you said about our bill."
- but, to this point, I have no reputable source for either of these claims.

Edit: Found a source. Those comments and that behaviour is, in fact, in the official record.

You know, I sat here writing a long comment...and I just can't. The topic makes me so screamingly angry that I just can't be coherent about it.
