"They DO come down, you know."
"Don't be stupid!"
"Well, what do YOU think happens to the bullets?"
"... I don't have time for that kind of abstract thinking!"

What happens is that they shoot babies in the head.

Yes, morons, gravity is "just a theory", too. That doesn't mean the bullets won't come back down.

Speaking of stupid Americans,
When a tanker truck full of gasoline is driving through your neighbourhood, it's PROBABLY not a good idea to throw bricks at it and launch fireworks at the driver's head.

Speaking of gravity,
German lands plane on speeding Porsche, by accident.

Speaking of Europe,
2012 Olympic Games to be held in London.

I was almost on the receiving end of one of those 4th of July bullets when I first moved out here in 1992. Was on the back porch in Oakland watching the fireworks when I started to hear gunfire. Took me a moment to realize what it was - because there was alot of it and I never knew about the shooting on the 4th. Then, I heard a wierd "thunk" in the deck wood and saw an impacted slug in the floor. I went inside and to this day I stay indoors during the 4th of July.

I think it would be a bit ironic celebrating my country's birthday by dying.

Bullets and the like falling after having been shot on a very steep angle aren't generally lethal. It's when idiots shoot them on a moderately flat trajectory that they retain the energy necessary to cause serious injury/death.

Also, idiots who shoot them at ALL in a city should be smacked upside the head (at the very least). Though they aren't very likely to cause death, property damage is quite probable.

One would think that it would be a likelyhood of hitting thing, not a trajectory thing.

Unless terminal velocity for a falling bullet is somehow *much* lower than muzzle velocity, to the point of being unlikely to penetrate?

And by "trajectory" I mean "energy". One would think a near-vertical bullet is less likely to kill than a horizontal one because it's less likely to hit, passing through a much smaller space at human-height.

Terminal velocity of a bullet that is just /falling/ is significantly lower than the energy that is released from the barrel of the gun during a normal gunshot. If the bullet is fired on a very steep trajectory, it just goes up, up, up at a tremendous speed until it runs out of the energy (from expanding gases) provided during the discharge. Then it is only gravity working to pull it back down.

Penetration can and does occur (as it is still a pointed lead weight), but injuries that /do/ result in death are usually as a result more of blunt-force trauma. And the deaths normally occur in younger people or women. And they almost always happen due to people shooting up into the air in areas where there are other people around (even many rural towns, it is not a safe activity).

Shooting into the air can be done safely, if you are aware of the ballistics of the load you are using, the current environmental conditions (wind speed), and the geographic location of people in the probable (and by probable, you open up the area beyond where the bullet could possibly fall, for safety) fall location.

The problem comes when idiots do it in a city or other populated area. I freely admit that some people should not own guns. Just the fact that injuries and property damage are the likely result of doing that in a populated area, means that people should give their heads a shake.

And yeah. A bullet coming down from a steep angled shot is significantly less likely to actually hit someone.

Stories like these just make me want to scream and bang my head off my desk.

There are way too many people in the world that should've been bear food.
