The Milky Way is not a perfect spiral galaxy but instead sports a long bar through its centre, according to new infrared observations from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.

The bar is estimated to stretch a total of about 27,000 light years from end to end.

So did I. The only thing I'd seen for that claim was those "You are Here" posters, though, and the perspective in them is different. That might be why.

Also I suspect under/overexposure like effects might cause the outer bits to disappear or appear, since they tend to go on for a long time, just getting thinner and thinner all the time.
